A Father to a Son

1 Kings 2:1 Now the days of David drew near that he should die, and he charged Solomon his son, saying: 2 “I go the way of all the earth; be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man.

David is ready to pass away but wants to instill the most important priority in his sons life.  Some think that being a strong man is all physical attributes, or heavy bravato or even male chauvinism.  There may be a small benefit to some of these but I don't believe this is the best route.  Let's read on for what the Spirit wants a father to give his son:

3 And keep the charge of the LORD your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn; 4 that the LORD may fulfill His word which He spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul,’ He said, ‘you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.

Keep Gods word, walk in His word, live His word.  I got the privilege to raise my son after the LORD his whole life.  From day one, we dedicated both our kids to God.  Everything we did was to invest in our kids and instill in them the LORDS way.  I know how David feels here, with his own frailty aside, his focus is on the LORD!  Dont get me wrong, I want to experience God everyday in my life but a greater joy of mine is if my kids walk in Gods ways and live greater for Jesus even than us.  The only path of success is found here, by the inspiration of the Spirit upon David.

The world presents the idea of acquiring lots of money and things to leave behind for our children or charity or taxes. What a blessing to follow God's plan. There is no better heritage to leave for our children than a lifetime of loving service to the Lord. What a legacy!
