Jerome of Prague (1416)

Jerome was shaped by John Wycliffe, as many were at this time.  John translated the 1st english new testament and Jerome used that to translate into the Czech language. Jerome was a scholar and at the trial of Jan Hus, sought to help defend him.  While passing through Germany, he was illegally arrested, chained, and paraded to Constance to stand trial with Hus. He was a threat to the Roman church.  Jerome was forbidden to speak due him being a persuasive, intelligent scholar, and they were afraid of his ability to defend the Christian faith and make them look really bad.  He was actually held over 340 days without trial. He was charged with 6 counts of ridiculing & persecuting the papacy and being a hater of the Christian religion.  Okay, whatever! They would torture him 11 days straight until he gave into refuting Hus & Wycliffe' teachings as false.  On the way back to his cell, he would retract that horrible confession he made out of trauma and the catholic church slapped upon him 107 new charges.  Sounds like he needed a lawyer!  They would burn him at the stake as well, which seemed to be their choice of murder at the time.  He told the council, "They taught the gospel is enough to rule the life of every Christian, that the pope is no different from any other priest, that communion is not the actual blood, body of Christ." As he burned, he sang, This soul in flames I offer, Christ, to Thee.  Jerome' death was not in vain.  It led the way for others after him to translate the bible into not only english, but many more languages so that everyone had access to the Word of God.

Incredible men of God sacrificed all for the treasure of making the Word of God accessible and understandable in our language and so many other languages. Thank you, Jon, for making us mindful of the cost paid so we have the privilege to pick up and read the love letter of the Father.

My pleasure really. This journey has been very beneficial for me in so many ways. Not only do we have biblical examples, but we have proven fruit from those in the written word until our day. The gospel message reproduces believers in every generation.
