George Wagner (1527)

It is said of Wagner, three matters separated him!  He lived a quiet easy going life but when push came to shove, would not budge on three matters.  He rejected the priests power to forgive sin, transubstantiation (Communion elements literally became Jesus' Body & blood), & infant baptism for salvation in the church.  He was converted to the Anabaptist movement, the radical reformers.  George Wagner claimed, what the Bible did not directly teach, he was under no human obligation to believe.
The prince of Bavaria, who was actually a mellow man, sought not to kill him but scare him away from such radical thoughts.  He refused to recant.  So the prince turned up a little heat by bringing his wife and children before him in hopes he would just confess that all this was an error and they all go home and live happily ever after.  He refused.  He was burned as a heretic.   His last words as he walked to his death with a smile were "Today I will confess my God before the world."  His executioner died in his bed that very night, unhappy!
