Dirk Willems (1569)

Dirk was a Protestant in Catholic Holland.  Not much is recorded of his last words but two last deeds he did.  The first, saving a mans life who was his enemy and second, dying with dignity and faith in the God who ultimately rescues all who trust in Him.  A warrant was issued for his arrest and he ran!  I cant blame him for running, though I wouldn't choose that option.  But again, an innocent man knowing that his faith in Gods word was enough to be put on a shame trial and killed would maybe be tempting.  He risked his life as he crossed an icy river as his pursuer trailed him.  He made it safely but he did not and fell into the icy waters.  He cried out for help and Dirk forsook all safety of self & went back to help him.  He saved his enemy and in return was going to be released but some from the town witnessed them together and yelled out to capture him.  He saved his enemy only to be delivered by him.  He was put to death by fire.  In every generation, Christianity suffers satanic hatred.  We in the U.S. have been shielded to some degree from most of it but for how long and at what cost?  Do I feel blessed that I don't suffer while my brothers & sisters do?  I just have to thank God He has, for reasons only known unto Him, allowed me to have some freedoms and time to be a supportive role for those whom are in the thick of death!  I'm no better than they!

I praise God that he gives us freedom in this country as Christians. It amazes me that those days people were punished by fire. What a horrific death!

nAt present, there are also Christians who were killed in a horrific way. I pray that when my time comes when God calls me home, I will be faithful and worthy of the saving grace that he gave me. Praise God for those who endured it all ‘til the end. “But he who endures to the end shall be saved.” Matthew 24:13.
