What a Person of God Looks Like
Matthew 3:4 Now John himself was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
We can learn a lot about a person by obvious things we see. Now, this isn't a mold to go by but more of a attention to detail example. John didn't look like your typical religious man. He actually probably would scare you. Its what isn't so important to John outwardly that make us understand why God used him so powerfully. Most religious people I know, seek to portray a highly spiritual, pure, wealthy persona about themselves. As if that makes you holier. The nicely cut hair and the three piece suit shows class. The luxurious things they have acquired is a sure stamp of Gods approval on his ministry. Yet not so fast. John was a simple man, down to earth approachable yet with a heavenly draw. It reminds me of Calvary Chapel in many ways. Our emphasis has always been upon Jesus and not men. Most pastors, including myself, resist dressing up not because I hate suits but whats the image Im trying to bring across? To many pastors and leaders dont know the people in whom they are called to serve. God forbid, if one person comes off the street, homeless, and comes in and sees a church all dressed up, he turns around and feels out of place and leaves. I set long ago, I dont want that so I have done something about it. I never want to forget my roots and the most lowly of people whom Jesus welcomes in with open arms. I know this offends some, the elitest mindset, but I'm sure there are plenty of churches out there that cater to those type people. I never want outward garments to be the primary focus of whether a man will stay to hear Gods word or leave, or worse, not even come. This may appear petty to some, trust me on this one, this can make or break your opportunity to reach a real true seeker of the LORD. Dressing up sure has a way also of making us appear greater than we are. When I'm in a suit, I feel on top of the world and that's another key reason I have only reserved my suit wearing days to marrying and burying. I hope you understand what I am saying here! Jesus is the experience I want in my life and I want others to experience as we gather. ps, there are even some Calvary guys who have gotten to big for their britches and are unapproachable. LORD forbid I ever get there. Most congregants in these mega churches have never personally met their pastor. That is atrocious.

I love this. My Granny taught me well on this subject. God looks at our heart and motives not our fashion sense.
