Simon the Zealot (74 AD)
Simon the Zealot may have been the most sketchy of men before following Jesus. He is believed to have been wanted, that's interesting. He and Judas Iscariot, were zealous Jews. Not a good natural fit with some of the other disciples but Jesus knows what He is doing and unites the un-unitable. Many Christians have had a very shady past and were, hopefully not any longer, violent offenders for their cause. Simon had a strong resistance against Rome, which modern day, he was a very political man, with a dose of religion mixed. To walk alongside of a tax collector as Matthew, only a work of God could do. Simon must have originally believed Jesus would kick out the Romans and usher in His kingdom.
Though his name speaks volumes of whom he was before Christ, his record as one of the twelve prove he was a changed man, no longer a zealot! He is believed to have been sawn in two.
God calls all sorts of people, all peoples in fact. Now, do we respond to the calling? God wont cast off any who come to Him. Simon is proof of this. He was considered a terrorist. Be became a totally new man. Only Jesus can do this! Do you desire for Jesus to make you new?
