Alphage (1012 AD)

Alphage was born into a noble English family, however since early childhood, chose to follow after Jesus & His kingdom rather than the temporal & privileged life of royalty.  He had a higher calling as a royal king & priest unto Christ.  He wanted to live as a hermit actually, in quietness, meditations of scripture, & seclusion but often life doesn't give us what we want.  He would instead be thrust into leadership, travel, international peace negotiations, & finally martyrdom.  As his last words of his life, "not my plan, but God's."
Often, brave courageous Christians as Alphage are never spoken about.  Their story just isn't glamorous enough I suppose to most.  However, to us who experience life & some even death, with Christ, his story is our story in many ways.  Most of Christianity is lived as Alphage.  We seek a path but are more than excited for God to shake that up and direct our steps!  Then our amazing journey with Christ takes off to limits never imagined or thought.  Next thing you know, a Calvary pastor from Mississippi is highlighting your amazing life!
Alphage was on a quest for peace in negotiations with king of Norway not to attack England. However Denmark wasn't having any peace.  Marauders took him hostage for ransom.  They shouted, give us gold!  His answer, "the gold I give you is the Word of God."  On Easter Sunday, they would bludgeon him to death since he couldn't deliver the ransom. The account says a sympathetic Dane ended his torment with an ax blow to the head. April 19th is now St. Alfefe's Day, after him.  His witness encourages me to expect great things from God even when Gods plans don't look like my own.  God takes us to greater heights than we could or would ever go ourselves. Alphage has blessed me today.  I would have never chosen south Mississippi in a million years unless for God.  I used to be shy in school and to think I would be speaking before multitudes, well, only God has done such with me.  Living off the grid appeals to my flesh in so many ways however that would be void of people!  People whom Christ came to save and people whom need to hear about Jesus.  So Gods will and my will cant coexist.  I want His will to be done!  It is the Alphages of the church that are powerful examples of Gods power & grace.

This made me think. What am I doing in Biloxi, of all places to end up. Five years ago I was in livng Colorado. Retired, contemplating where to move. A big factor was family. My family were believers. I wanted to be around a Christian family. What I got is more than I expected or could've imagined. I've realized a change in me. It's not a dramitic change. It's been a quiet change. A change of heart. A heart for Jesus, more than it has ever been in my life. Still open for more of His spirit to fill me. My story may never be writen about by men but it's my story, being written by Him. The best is yet to come. Oh yeah, my Christian family has grown, in the people at CGC. Praise GOD!
