Origen (254 AD)

Origen, we know a lot about.  He was an Egyptian and his parents solid Christians.  He witnessed his fathers martyrdom and would have died with him but his mother hid his clothes so he couldn't run out and die.  It wasn't his time to go to heaven as of yet.  Origen would become the 1st theologian of the church, 1st bible commentator, & the 1st writer of systematic theology and wrote a statement of faith.  He would become a teacher of scripture, an amazing applicator of the word, I often have refereed to him as the inspiration of Jon Coursen, Calvary Chapel pastor in our time.  Origen would often take a spiritual meaning to most everything which got him into trouble on many occasions.  He is considered an early church father. Many of his students were martyred and he was left to live!  John the Apostle knows the burden that must have felt. He was a very humble man, gave often to the poor, owning only 1 coat, I have 10 or more, & slept on the floor.  He was a faithful servant of Christ during 3 evil emperors but at age 65, zealots of Decius chained and tortured him.  He would be released but never recovered and soon died.  His writings are well studied today by historians & scholars.  Yet his greatest achievement was a book written, On Prayer, revealing his heart & love for his God.
