Forsaking idols

1 Ssam 7:3 Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you return to the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths from among you, and prepare your hearts for the Lord, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.” 4 So the children of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.

Return to the LORD and prepare your hearts.  This is always the real reason for our defeats.  We have departed from God or His instruction.  We have forsaken His presence.  We dont prepare ourselves for Him.  And all this starts in our hearts.  God wasnt captured, Israel was!  They left the presence of God.  They didnt know they were standing on thin ice.  Yet God is faithful to speak to fallen men.  Put away your idols!  John would end his letter of 1st John with this warning, beware of idols.  An idol is anything, anyone that we put in the place that only God deserves in our lives.  And this always begins in our hearts.  We all have them.  So what is mine?  What is yours?  Will we desire the LORD more than an idol?
